Alex Whitaker, Women’s Ministry Assistant

Alex was born and raised in Durham, North Carolina. Part of her time in high school was spent searching for her identity in all the wrong places. By God’s grace, a Young Life leader showed up in Alex’s life that became a great friend and mentor. Although she grew up going to church, Alex’s heart was finally opened to the gospel the summer after her sophomore year of high school at Young Life’s Frontier Ranch in Colorado. After high school, Alex attended Appalachian State in Boone, NC where she became a volunteer Young Life leader.

In 2008, Alex married her best friend since middle school, Jay. After college, Alex and Jay both went on staff with Young Life in the small town of Mount Airy, North Carolina (Mayberry), for five years. In April 2012, Jay was suddenly diagnosed with leukemia and, after a grueling year and a half battle of treatments and hospitals, Jay took his place as a citizen of heaven in October 2013. Since then, Alex has felt the Lord calling her away from Young Life in order to have time to grieve and regain her footing. It is in this season that Alex has found herself in Charlotte. She is currently attending Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary where she is working on her Masters in Christian Ministries and waiting to see where the Lord will take her next.

When she’s not studying, Alex loves to go to the movies, binge watch TV shows on Netflix, try new restaurants, enjoy live music, and travel with friends. She likes to watch almost all sports, but UNC basketball is her true allegiance. The significant influences in Alex’s spiritual life and ministry are Young Life, Tim Keller, John Piper, and a number of close friendships with people who have walked through life with her.
