Visitor FAQ

We realize that visiting a new church for the first time can be intimidating. To help alleviate some of the anxiety over the unknown, here’s what you can expect when you visit Hope:

Attire – We run the gamut from a few people in ties to a few people in shorts and Teva’s, but the vast majority of people dress in “business casual” at Hope. We’re not concerned with what people wear, whatever is personally most conducive to you encountering God on Sunday morning is fine with us. If you’re wanting to blend in on your first visit though, go with khakis and a golf shirt or the female equivalent of that.

Location – We share space with a Korean Speaking Presbyterian Congregation and the main sign in front of the building is for the Presbyterian Church of Charlotte. They meet at the same time as us in the building’s traditional sanctuary. Hope’s congregation meets in the multipurpose gym on the side of the building furthest away from Woodlawn Road. Hopefully our signage makes it easy to find the right part of the building, but if you find the worship “foreign” you may be in the wrong room.  Directions

Parking – We encourage our members and regular attenders to park along Scaleybark Road so that spaces are available in the two parking lots beside the building for our visitors. Please feel free to use these.

Arrival – The worship service begins at 10:45, but punctuality isn’t our strong suit. Many people are still arriving at 10:45. While we’re trying to encourage our members and regular attenders to arrive earlier, we want to give you fair warning that if you arrive early (or even on time) the sanctuary may feel slightly empty until closer to 11:00.

When you arrive, you’ll receive an order of worship from one of greeters which will contain the sermon text and outline for that morning along with announcements about upcoming events at Hope.

Children – Children up through 4 years old can be dropped off in the nursery or their respective classroom anytime after 10:35 am. After about the first 15 minutes of worship, children up through 5th Grade will be dismissed from the sanctuary to Children’s Church, an age appropriate time of worship and teaching (you can read more about why we do this and what your Children will experience in Children’s Church on our Children’s Ministry page).

When you drop your child off, you will receive a pager so that our children’s ministry volunteers can alert you if your child needs you during the worship service. All of our volunteers go through a screening process and we follow a series of safety protocols to ensure that your child is safe while in our care and you’re able to be at ease during the worship service. You're also welcome to keep your children with you in the worship service if you prefer.

We also provide a nursing mother’s room just off the sanctuary where you can hear the worship and sermon.

Worship – Our worship style is an acoustic blend of traditional and contemporary worship music led by a small worship team. The majority of our music is traditional hymns set to more contemporary music. Almost all of our music is congregational singing. We try to put all of our songs in an easily “singable” key and put the songs lyrics on a screen. Our goal is to make it easy for everyone to participate as much as they want and not have anyone feel “lost” in the service whether it’s their first or fiftieth time worshipping with us.

After an initial Call to Worship, we sing several songs together then dismiss the children to Children’s Church. While the kids are leaving we take 5 minutes or so to say hello to one another and visitors. Our intention is not to make you feel awkward or single any one out but to give you an opportunity to at least make an initial connection with someone. Please feel free to introduce yourself to others, Hope always has lots of visitors and many of the people sitting around you may well be attending for their 1st or 2nd time as well.

After this time, we typically sing a few more songs together and then hear a sermon. We alternate between preaching through books of the Bible and topical sermons. Our goal is to let people consider the Biblical picture of Jesus and the message of Christianity for themselves, so all of our sermons are an explanation of a biblical passage (for more information see Our Beliefs).

The sermons are usually 30-35 minutes long, followed by one or two songs responding to the message with the service ending by 12:00.
