Preparing To Rejoice In Him // October 29, 2017

PREPARE YOUR HEART FOR WORSHIP ON OCTOBER 29, 2017

“There is one vice of which no man in the world is free; which every one in the world loathes when he sees it in someone else; and of which hardly any people, except Christians, ever imagine that they are guilty of themselves…There is no fault that makes a man more unpopular, and no fault which we are more unconscious of in ourselves. And the more we have it ourselves, the more we dislike it in others. The vice I am talking of is Pride or Self-Conceit: and the virtue opposite to it, in Christian morals, is called Humility…If anyone would like to acquire humility, I can, I think, tell him the first step. The first step is to realize that one is proud. And a biggish step too. At least, nothing whatever can be done before it. If you think you are not conceited, it means you are conceited indeed.” C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

What exactly does it mean to bear one another’s burdens or love your neighbor as yourself? I thought I knew, but after a recent conversation with some friends this past Tuesday it was pretty clear I knew nothing. Simply put: Do I view others needs just as important as my own? Sadly, I had to answer “no” and truthfully, my answer has not changed. My prayer, as I sit and “try” to prepare for worship this coming Sunday, is that I would value and love others as much as I love myself. And, that I would see their need and burdens just as important as I see my own.

The above quote by C.S. Lewis hits all too close to home for me…because I know it to be true.

WORSHIP IN SONG

The Wonderful Cross

When I survey the wondrous cross n which the Prince of Glory died
My richest gain I count but loss And pour contempt on all my pride

See from His head, His hands, His feet; sorrow and love flow mingled down
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet Or thorns compose so rich a crown

O the wonderful cross, O the wonderful cross
Bids me come and die and find that I may truly live
O the wonderful cross, O the wonderful cross
All who gather here by grace draw near and bless Your name

Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were an offering far too small
Love so amazing, so divine; demands my soul, my life my all

GOD’S CALL TO COME WORSHIP & DENY OURSELVES :: Luke 9:23-24

[23] And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. [24] For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. (ESV)

CONFESSING OUR FAITH :: New City Catechism, Question 7

Question 7. What does the law of God require?

Answer: Personal, perfect, and perpetual obedience; that we love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength; and love our neighbor as ourselves. What God forbids should never be done and what God commands should always be done.
