Preparing To Rejoice In Him // May 20, 2018

PREPARE YOUR HEART FOR WORSHIP ON MAY 20, 2018

REFLECTION

“The Jesus way wedded to the Jesus truth brings about the Jesus life. We can’t proclaim the Jesus truth but then do it any old way we like. Nor can we follow the Jesus way without speaking the Jesus truth. But Jesus as the truth gets far more attention than Jesus as the way. Jesus as the way is the most frequently evaded metaphor among the Christians with whom I have worked for 50 years as a North American pastor.” – Eugene Peterson, The Jesus Way

“If our starting place with God is the radical grace extended through Jesus, then the spiritual disciplines are invitations, not obligations—ways of being with God, not appeasing him.” – Mike Cosper, Recapturing the Wonder: Transcendent Faith in a Disenchanted World

“When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said “Repent,” he intended that the entire life of believers should be repentance.” – Martin Luther

WORSHIP IN SONG :: His Mercy Is More

What love could remember no wrongs we have done
Omniscient all knowing, He counts not their sum
Thrown into a sea without bottom or shore
Our sins they are many His mercy is more

Praise the Lord
His mercy is more
Stronger than darkness, new every morn
Our sins they are many, His mercy is more

What patience would wait as we constantly roam
What Father so tender is calling us home
He welcomes the weakest, the vilest the poor
Our sins they are many His mercy is more

What riches of kindness He lavished on us
His blood was the payment His life was the cost
We stood ‘neath a debt we could never afford
Our sins they are many His mercy is more

CONFESSION OF FAITH :: Ephesians 4:18-19, Article 11 of the Synod of Dort

What is life like on the way of the wicked?

Your thinking is futile. Your understanding is darkened. You are separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in you due to the hardening of your hearts. Having lost all sensitivity, you give yourself over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity with a continual lust for more. (Ephesians 4:18-19)

How does God create in us a clean heart?

God not only causes the gospel to be preached to us, and powerfully enlightens our minds by His Holy Spirit, that we may rightly understand and discern the things of God; but by the power of the same regenerating Spirit He opens our closed heart and softens it; transforms our will from being evil, disobedient, and resistant to being good, obedient, and pliable; and strengthens us, that like a good tree, we may bring forth the fruits of good actions. (Article 11 of the Synod of Dort)

GOD CALLS US TO WORSHIP :: Psalm 63:1-3

My Soul Thirsts for You
A Psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah.
[1] O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
[2] So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
beholding your power and glory.
[3] Because your steadfast love is better than life,
my lips will praise you. (ESV)
